how do I reflex an ironwood self bow?
I have already picked out the tree for my next bow… It is a 6″ ironwood tree with about 8′ straight at the base… the scales run nice and straight down the side so the grain should be ok… am thinking of making it a reflex-deflex type bow and was wondering if I should work the stave to a decent floor tiller while it is green then clamp it in a mold till it dries, or if I would be better off waiting till it is fully seasoned before working with it and boiling/steaming the wood to reflex the limbs…
I don’t think it’s a good idea to work the wood when it’s green. I’ve never done it, and never heard of any other makers doing it. I’d get it all cut out and the back burnished and floor tillered like you say. Then you can make a reflexing jig out of something like a 2×12 or similar. Have the board long and wide enough to accept your bows back on it’s edge. You can have this board cut in a curve or angled on the limbs so that when you clamp your heated and steamed stave to it, if conforms to the curve you made. You may have to repeat this process in small steps several times.
Good luck with it.
