Should I buy a discount arc left, or learn to shoot straight?

I am left eye dominant, but the right hand, I draw my gun with his left hand without any problem but as a bow, I have to choose between 2 recurva, only one is handmade right (PSE Kingfisher) and other Buckeye PES is made for two. It is through the state DNR Washington: unlawful for any person to hunt big game with a bow that has less than 40 pounds of pull measured in twenty-eight inches or shorter draw. That sounds very fair and states have a similar restriction. My friend antelope hunting with a recurve, but it's 55-60 pounds, I think anyway, is 30 pounds not enough speed or when responding to deer. Right-hand bow is held in the left hand, left-hand bow in the right hand. Yeah, it does seem a bit counter-intuitive… but it is usually the dominant hand that does the work of pulling (drawing) the string back; if you are right-eye dominant use a right-hand bow, and if you are left-eye dominant you should use a left-hand bow (the dominant eye is the one you actually aim with, even if you keep both eyes open – but the dominant eye does not always coincide with the dominant hand).

With compound bows, there is room for draw-weight adjustment, within certain limits. Don’t be fooled by all the hype out there about how much draw-weight is “needed” in order to kill any animal (unless you happen to be planning a hunt in Africa, where a heavy [70 lb +] draw-weight is required for the “Big Five”); Sandie Karch, of 3Rivers Archery, shot (and killed) a Kudu — using a 46 lb Tomahawk longbow and a 485 gr arrow. Kudu are about the same size as American Elk.

Also with compounds, there is what is called “let-off”: You are not going to hold the entire draw-weight at full draw, only a percentage of it. For a “70 lb draw” compound with a mere 20% let-off, the actual holding weight (at full draw) is 56 lbs — but when the string is released, the arrow is propelled with the force of the whole 70 lbs of draw-weight. It’s because of the design of the cams, or “wheels”. And even a “piddling” 56 lbs can be a lot hold back for more than one minute, even using the whole hand…. For this example, the formula is 70 X .20 (20%) = 14; 70 minus 14 = 56.

Get arrows heavy enough to obtain good penetration in the animal, but light enough to fly accurately; it will be a trade-off, but it is better to err on the heavy side — light-weight arrows usually do not have enough total mass to take full advantage of the momentum/kinetic eneregy given them from the bow. Heavier arrows also make for a quieter bow, and that’s extremely important when it comes time to take the shot; game animals actually do have “lighting-fast” reflexes, and really can “jump the string” (they hear the noise of the bow long before they see the arrow). Use a super-light-weight arrow with a heavy-draw bow and you might as well just holler at the animal before you take the shot.

And as I said in answer to another of your questions…make sure your arrows are matched to your draw-length, your bow, and the intended use (in this case, hunting). Use improperly-matched arrows, and things can turn nasty in a hurry… Without good, well made arrows, matched properly to the bow/archer, even the best bow in the world is just another stick.
