Jazz Essentials
I used to tell people that I met on airplanes or in the evenings I writing about jazz for a living. Once last begun to wonder what kind of "living" that amounted to, he smiled and said: "I jazz, then do stopped, and added: "I do not know much about it."
They were suspicious, undermined by references to success and Development graphic Jazz things – like how to swing bebop 50 years 40 years begat this which resulted in 60 free-jazz and all that. As if there was a text book (in fact, some of my friends are writing criticism, but it another story) and can not be a consideration, you know. Not to mention the political struggles, why swing was king, or the balance of payments or the manner melting everything around 70 dead.
Or perhaps he was disgusted by everything about technology: flat fifths and expanded the numbers behind the agreements and rhythmic propulsion of the swing – rocket science or something.
Then there is the aspect of worship: the boys Older bending and swaying in the back of the club, do as the ancient Jews moved to the rocking of a temple, or the general inclination down before gods like Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker and John Coltrane (not to mention the infighting that deserves more holy state).
The only thing is that jazz is not either – and all that. Assessment requires no prior knowledge, but also to listen to offers from all corners of the ongoing enrichment. Aspects of technical accomplishments of jazz have both the beauty and complexity of advanced mathematics: And the music is a true religious weight, because both the spiritual traditions of thought from time to time and in honor of meditation.
I can not give you a list of 12 best, or to say that what follows is the story whole. But the list following specific lines of thought, instrumental technique, ideas and rhythmic design group. The points are easy to connect, clearly identified the names and sounds memorable.
And this list is like a sponge toys, located in the water, magically grow overnight. Listen, and you will find expansive knowledge easily absorbed, not to mention the natural ties with many artists and recordings.

To tell the story of jazz Louis Armstrong, not on the top is cut off the head of the living organism that is jazz. Listen to the Carnegie Hall Concert: January 1943
Artist: Duke Ellington
Release Date: 1943
little jazz from the majesty, subtlety, integrity and the spark of the band of Duke Ellington in the 40s. There was a time when the two roles overlap jazz, since no more: it was popular music, the heart of a nation and spirit, and artistic revolution, the mapping of new water. In Ellington, as perhaps no other musician Louis Armstrong, jazz has a leader who understands two units. Ellington was a dream to play at Carnegie Hall, and expected accomplishments of Lincoln Center Wynton Marsalis today. This recording contains shorter songs (wonderful large image) Ellington and more ambitious, long-term work "Black, Brown and Beige." There are statements individual star players, including saxophonists Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges, but in reality, is the brilliant cohesion of the band and a complete overview Ellington made of this timeless music.
Hear Tomorrow is the question
Artist: Ornette Coleman
Release Date: 1959
music of Ornette Coleman always relied on the tradition – Charlie listen Parker and hear the echoes here – distilled into something new and said directly before, or curled like an interrogative sentence. Here, the title Coleman calls on the two ideas. And the quartet of music has announced its configuration piano chord changes and harmonics alone does not limit the music of Coleman, replaced by his personal bias in the science of liberation. The Coleman and trumpeter Don Cherry shade of other lines, and the exchange of ideas, the process seems closer to the pure joy that the hard sciences. Nearly half a century later, still sounds fresh.
Play Alone In San Francisco
Artist: Thelonious Monk
Release Date: 1959
The warmer, more Addictive I returned to university was the music of Monk. I never heard anything like it, and opened an entirely new idea for me of how the piano can sound and what music can do: his compositions, each arpeggio or a group of his tone, the content of mathematics, R & B, Abstract Expressionism and slapstick humor. I went to discover a world of jazz musicians, all directly or indirectly affected by Monk, but none that sounded like him. And although a good album Monk recorded remarkable stellar main bands, but his music has led others to play with a particular vision and cohesion, is Monk on piano what I want: Straight, No Chaser. Here, early in his career, by itself, becomes a monk Fugazi Hall in San Francisco with the unique architecture of the piano. This is not what all the sounds of jazz, as it is: This is what the world of jazz seems after Monk.
Play Bill Evans Trio: Sunday at the Village Vanguard

There are a lot of testing religious folklore and literature to support the idea that three is a magic number: the Bill Evans trio could be the strongest argument of jazz to this question. Evans was one of the foremost jazz pianists of lyrical, and it is best time here. But it is the nature of this trio that rises above all: neither Evans nor bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian stick to the usual role. And slice of cheese three points of the fourth which is the Village Vanguard (the closest thing to a sacred space that is in jazz) announced today the music is a quality prayer etc..
Listen Live Trane: European tours
Artist: John Coltrane
Date Year: 1961
In 1961, the style of Coltrane solos – the free movement through the chord changes and improvisations based scale that the critic Ira Gitler dubbed "sheets of sound" – was his signature. His concept of the band was equally determined to push the boundaries of the explosive energy. Coltrane may have set up meetings to discuss jazz music's most memorable, but there's really nothing to do with how caught live. These questions, taken from a three-LP, is powerful in two contexts in four years: in 1961 a quintet with Eric Dolphy on alto sax, flute and clarinet, and leading his quartet concerts of classical music in 1963 and 1965. The fire and especially the communion between Coltrane and drummer Elvin Jones in the material later to do something.
Listen spiritual unity
Artist: Ayler
Release Date: 1964
The first release on the label Bernard Stollman of ESP is the session that led to Albert Ayler to the forefront of the avant-garde jazz. It remains a touchstone for any open-minded musicians who want to explore the sonic possibilities of a given instrument, to exploit the global effects of a small group and undermine the spiritual influence of the expression music. For some, the arsenal of sounds from his saxophone convinced Ayler – shouting, screaming, moaning, horns and a mile vibrato when he wanted – represented contortions his newly discovered, the other soprano saxophone, which dates back to early evocations of jazz, like Sidney Bechet. Ayler action provides the axis connecting the current punk rock free jazz: He took the simplest of song structures and became more complex visceral splatter. Their "Ghosts" done here in two versions, in fact, you hunt.

Before, when I edited a journal of jazz, I find problems regularly with writers who think that Latin jazz has been a small box with American jazz. Jazz is much stories as a central theme is the African Diaspora. The music of Latin America, South America and the Caribbean are cousins of American music (and containing secret rhythmic we have forgotten, I would say). Cuba, in particular, music has a special relationship with the United States, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was honored that the ranks of jazz that truth with depth and style. Although he made his great Dizzy Bang Cuban previous decades, this 1975 session the group is famous Frank "Machito" Grillo, the great Cuban trumpeter Mario Bauza. Composer and arranger Chico O'Farrill, "Gold, Frankincense and myrrh "is that merging modern ideas between cultures that you hear today.
