Notes on the Spirit Rock: Visit the Monday night class with Jack Kornfield Buddhism
Peter Menkin
Spirit Rock not a New Age center in itself. Located in San Francisco Bay Area (Marin County Woodacre), Spirit Rock is home to Buddhists. There are Zen Buddhists, as stressed. They are Theravada, as one of its founding members, the professor and popular writer Jack Kornfield.
Many find Spirit Rock a beautiful place, perfect spiritual and visit and take to the withdrawal. Marin County, especially South Marino, not a place of Christian worship. The practice of participation and the Church Christians are few. So says a major study on the practice of religious intolerance in Marin. (Tobin, Gary A. and Patricia Lin. Religious and spiritual change in America: the experience of Marin County, California. San Francisco: Institute for Jewish and Research, 2002.) The following item Anecdotal evidence indicated interest in religion in the San Francisco Bay Area Marin County. A librarian said the Tiburon collection of spiritual books and religious his collection are the new era. Christian reading is of no interest. Jack Kornfield, Buddhist teacher, is a popular writer and many read their books, here in San Francisco Bay Area and the United States.
Jack Kornfield wrote books are Buddhist teaching.
Random House, publisher of the book "… After the laundry, said:" Enlightenment does not exist,''author and internationally known master Meditation Jack Kornfield says. "The ultimate freedom and joy in union with the divine … these experiences are more common than we know, and not far away.
"But even after the completion of this achievement – after the ecstasy – we are faced with the daily task translation that freedom in our imperfect life. We are faced with the Laundromat.
"Based on experiences and perceptions leaders and professionals in the Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, and Sufi traditions, this book offers a unique and intimate understanding of how honest modern spiritual journey unfolds – and how we can prepare our hearts for awakening. "
An excerpt of the book is in the additive at the end of this article is used with permission Editor).
According to the Marin Independent Journal "Article" His books have been translated into 20 languages and sold over one million copies. They include a path with heart: After the ecstasy, the laundry teachings of Buddha Heart Research of the wisdom of life Dharma, a forest pool, however, Ghost Stories, stories of heart, the little instruction book Buddha, The art of forgiveness, mercy and peace, and his latest book, a wise heart: A Guide to Buddhist teachings universal psychology. "
A brief excerpt from " The Heart Wise target = "_blank"> Guide to Buddhist psychology, universal education. "(" The Wise Hart "published Paperback by Bantam in April 2008 and just released in paperback in May this year.)
"When we learn to rest in consciousness, there are two treatments and silence. Do not listen to what the next step to do and know everything that happens, a large space and a feeling of love connection. When there is enough space, all our being able to grasp the situation and be comfortable. We see the dance of life, danced very well, but we are not trapped in it. In any situation, we can open up, relax and get back to nature like the sky of consciousness. "
Then Jack Kornfield, author promises in his new book.
My church friend Letty said Jack Kornfield is not the only writer who is a teacher Spirit Rock. Sylvia Boorstein work, entitled "It's easier than you think" is the "Spirit Rock teacher … experience as a Buddhist. " The fact is that but as a writer Jack Kornfield is very popular and well known, there are other Buddhist Spirit Rock teachers who write books on subject.
As someone who is not familiar with the Spirit Rock, the visitors came with the idea that there is the New Era. What I found was a place of meditation, Buddhist, whose staff is friendly and pleasant and ethics. There are few "members" of the Spirit Rock, as it does not sign a book for "official" members, or is necessary to enjoy the Christian rite of inclusion. In other words, everyone is welcome and people come and go as they please. Above all, come visit and even stay for years who say they are Buddhists. It works and is appreciated by many and practiced by many who visit.
Spirit Rock answers are not necessarily close in classical sense, this reporter could not get all your questions. They have been raised, among others, and add the taste of his worldview:
The question comes to mind, and I can confirm the fact, too, if you? Spirit Rock has a relationship with the Dominicans, and if so, what, how time has past, and what is nature and some details about this relationship?
His response was "We are in the forest of Buddhists in Thailand or Theravada tradition, without any association with the Dominicans.
In another series of questions by e-mail, they were asked.
- What is the official name of the room?
- Jack is associated with a monastery or other organization, or is your Spirit Rock Buddhist official home?
- Is it certain Buddhist teaching of one?
- Is the money earned in the speech is for him (partly?)?
- Is it the money from his books go entirely to Jack?
- What is "Jack the title," or in other words addressed to him as a "brother" or "Master?
- Is this the way formal? I realize that everyone calls him by his first name, Jack.
- You have a newspaper photo of himself with the wife or family?
The e-mail response from one of its official press releases of this type has so …
"This is what I can say. Jack is a co-founder of Insight Meditation as (IMS) in Barre, Massachusetts and Spirit Rock Meditation of Center Woodacre, CA. It was a Thai monk forests under Ajahn Chah at Wat Pah Pong Monastery in Thailand, part of the tradition of Theravada Buddhism. Here's a link to information on key requirements Jack

We call the room where the event took place last night officially the "Sala del Retiro superior" to the "superior" lowercase. In general, the class is on Monday evening the hill, in the Meditation Room of the Community, so that was a bit last night only. I have no answer for you the numbers, but filled to capacity. Jack calls often a very large crowd, so it was what we expected last night. Jack has no title, except for PhD students (Although we tend to refer to him as the doctor, sometimes they do print their name with a PhD after). It is officially a teacher "Dharma" but would not be used in capital letters. He has a wife and a daughter, but who have no photos of them together for liberation. His family tends to keep a low profile. "
Well the answer to your way: there is here for your e-mail is very interesting and shows how the Spirit Rock meets and how they see the world, which is full of character with the other religions, because they also have a worldview that sees through his lens.
Please note that many teachers at Spirit Rock stress the feminine as does Debra Chamberlin Taylor, who wrote in his August 2009 "New Spirit Rock, n whether there are other Buddhist center that has a statue of Prajna Paramita sit as equals alongside the Buddha in his altar. The image of the "Mother of all Buddhas clearly communicates the intent of the Spirit Rock in honor of the female. Some people might ask: "What is the point? No matter, because the lighting has no gender." It true, but for many people, especially women, to see the image is important, both consciously and unconsciously. This is a reminder that females and males, full enlightenment.
In the same "New Spirit Rock," the article "The Sacred Feminine: restoring the balance in difficult times (Interviews by Walt Opie, Communications Coordinator), a yoga instructor, a novelist ("Illustration for idiots") writes:
Again, not a problem of men against women, because I know many teachers who also accent on these dimensions of practice. But when I'm sitting on a yoga retreat that is oriented toward the sacred feminine, I am aware of an explicit value for the interpersonal aspect of the practice, the intimate aspect of practice, the qualities of relaxation and openness rather than domination and control. This approach focuses on enabling and if, instead of doing and becoming.
Her name is Debra Chamberlin-Taylor.
Opportunity offered to talk with Jack Kornfield after their conversation, because he was in the upper part of the main room when I went Retirement meditation. A man looking lighter than imagined, this writer does not mention him, it is easy to see that there was a penetrating and conscious of the gaze to prepare to speak at that meeting he had over 300. The room I was standing with people in the room. A greater proportion of participants were young or young. Nearly half of the room was on the floor with floor pillows in the section meditation pillows were of good quality, the public educated people in general. No problems here or ascetic society. Jack Kornfield is present, even if it seemed to most others who were present, the familiarity of what they had seen and heard his speech came play. One their way to glory.
Something about the night:
The chairs in the rest of us were good meeting in the hall. I notice how comfortable they are, for many churches have not only chairs Nice. For many churches, general chairs folding chairs. Spirit Rock is comfortable, more expensive and more elegant than some have been, like the Hermitage Immaculate Heart of Big Sur. Impressed by the beautiful sights and tranquility of this retreat, this retreat center in a comfortable environment is far from outside the center-bub.
Glass windows in the room made the ambient light. Everyone enjoyed the room, it seemed. They were a joyous crowd.
Call this Group A? Perhaps, but most are presented as the applicants. They are disappointed by Jack Kornfield.
Someone said Jack returns from a recent book tour, and this was his first speech since his return on Monday. Thus, the large crowd. But without the following companies and establishes a larger anyway.
We sat for 15 minutes before the arrival of Jack Kornfield in class. He taught at Spirit Rock for 20 years or more on compassion and enlightenment. In essence, the night was one to calm the mind, it seems to be 35 minutes of introduction, talk and discussion. Of course, this does not include 40 minutes of meditation. It is very beautiful meditation.
Notes on the presentation:
7:23 pm. Steady and silent. The phone rang the cell, and Jack has reminded people to get rid of them, and to be present.
7:40 pm. Quiet, yet. We could clearly hear the cry of a bird or the bird outside the room.
Jack Kornfield is sitting on a small raised stage (elevator) a Buddha behind him and a statue of Prajnaparamita. One is black and brown. The flowers are among the Buddha statue and behind Jack Prajnaparamita is seated. This a simple altar. There is an office before Jack (altar?), And a bell to ring tto the right (not a bellman). It is sometimes used for chatting and meeting.
7:48 pm. He said: "Rest in space am aware. "The bell rings twice at 7:50
We sat together, all People in the connection. Thus, it was one of the goals the night. Jack spoke briefly about his visit to Israel and Palestine, which said it was a journey of peacemaking. He calls it "… very wide. "Spirit Rock offers high Calls in a large room.
A feeling the evening was the spirit that all the talk is expensive. The evening is made for many of the beloved moments, or so it seems.
8:10 pm. The bell rings several times to ask people to return from the break of 15 minutes. There will speak to Jewish practice, a rabbi and Buddhist Sylvia Boorstein Buddhist master. A man sits next to the woman to my right and said: "How are you? "I feel wonderful I am. "
8:13 pm. The conversation begins, and we are told, There is no evidence at the end. A request was made that people who are grade "resonate" with them. Jack explains that he has health problems. The 60 year-old said: "Weird things happen." In a funny note, Jack said: "A doctor asked might just be me. "The group laughed.
It is time to return to ourselves, "said Jack. He said that they are "applicants".
8:23 pm. More stories about Jack, and aphorisms. Henry Miller quotes briefly in Speak among others. Jack asks: "What animates his life?" The command headquarters and let the rest of compassion you can see the world as observed. It reads Rilke. Instructed occupy the seat in the middle of everything.
8:28 pm. Speaking of George Schaller, Jack primatologist speaking on gorillas and humans. Your comment refers to the presence and kindness and gentleness. Are encouraged to present, sitting like Buddha. He said: Our life is made of rivers. (He said he review the basics of this evening._ said, Every Breath You Take "contains a molecule of air of Julius Caesar.
8:36 pm. Story of Iraq shows a sign of respect instead of pulling the United States in the war. He reminded those present to take the seat in the center of your body.
8:44 pm. Mark Twain is noted briefly as well. Jack read Mark Twain and comments.
Jack tells a story of how the Meditation helps your doctor training is a benefit, even in the face of death. move people, but audible.
Albert Camus Cites James Baldwin.
Continuing with written notes, he said, to take place in the middle of things takes courage. Practice more in the space of consciousness.
8:48 pm. He said: We are here and now. This is the place of freedom.
George Washington Carver mentioned.
8:53 pm. Jack said something about the madness of the spiritual life. It is offered as a statement, the Buddhist nature in you. Things are as they are, "he said at all everyone in the room.
9:09 pm. The conversation ends. It offers, let stand for several minutes. There are 3 bells. Everyone sings as guest.
End of the night.

Addendum:
Excerpt from Jack Kornfield's book, "From" After the ecstasy, laundry. "
When I saw myself becoming a Buddhist monk in a monastery in the forest Thailand for over thirty years, I learned to bow. It is difficult in principle. Whenever we enter the meditation hall we fall on their knees and with respect to the head three times between the palms of our hands on the stone floor. It was a practice of respect and attention, a way to honor a gesture of the body of our commitment to the path of the monk of simplicity, compassion and awareness. We bow in the same way Whenever we take our places for the training of teachers.
Having been in the monastery for a week or two, one Older monks took me aside for further instructions. "In this monastery, not only must bow when entering the room meditation and receive the master's teachings, but when he meets with the elderly. "As the only Westerner, and you want to work properly, I asked my elders, they were. "Traditionally those who are older in time management, the monks that were longer than you are your biggest he said. It took only one minute to Everyone wanted to say.
Then he began to roll before them. Sometimes it was fine – they were very few old wise and worthy in the community. But sometimes he felt ridiculous. I am a monk twenty years, full of pride, he was there only to please their parents or eat better food than I could at home, and I had to bend because he had ordered the week before me. Or had to suffer a rice neglected years who came to the monastery before the season in the regime retirement scheme for farmers, who chews betel nut ever and had never thought one day her life. It was difficult to curtsey these forest dwellers fellow teachers as being so great.
However, I there with a bow, and was in conflict, I was looking for a way to make it work. Finally, as I prepared once again to give up one day my "old", I started looking for a value of each individual aspect that I bowed. I saluted the wrinkles around his eyes retired farmer, for all the difficulties he had seen and suffered and triumphed. I bowed to the vitality and joy in the young monks, incredible opportunities of each Instead of their lives ahead of us.
I started to enjoy a rainbow. I bowed my Seniors, I bowed before entering the dining room and I went. I bent down to get into my little house, and I greeted the property before taking a bath. Ater a hello everything went my way – it was just what I did. If he moved, I leaned toward her.
It is the spirit of reverence that informs this book. The true task of spiritual life is not in remote places or unusual states of consciousness: It here, in the present. We are invited to host a welcoming spirit to all this life than we did with a heart full of wisdom, respect and nature. We go to the beauty and suffering, our disorder and confusion, fears and injustices in the world. True to the truth This path is the path to freedom. Undergoing this is more than ideal is not necessarily easy, but difficult, however, is one practices the most useful and honorable.
To obey the reality of our lives and betrayals is to accept pain, and the depth of this gesture is that all life is viable. How to learn to give, we have discovered that the heart has more freedom and compassion that we could imagine.
The Persian poet Rumi speaks thus:
This man is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain all
Even if you are a host of penalties
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture.
But treating each guest of honor
It may clear
for some new pleasure.
Black thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be thankful for coming
because each has been sent
as a guide beyond.

Just Give yourself a Little Fresh Passion This Valentine’s Day
You Can Have Sweet Success
Just give yourself a little Fresh PASSION this Valentine’s Day
While I was in college, I articulated my methodology for creating a successful personal brand (though at that time I hadn’t classified it into this brilliant acronym). I called it Fresh P.A.S.S.I.O.N., an acronym that stands for Preparing yourself, Aspiring to reach your goals, Staying laser-focused, Selling your value, Invigorating yourself, Omitting the negative, and Nailing the brand.
And of course, all the passion in the world won’t enable you to achieve success if you employ an outdated, stale approach to your career, your business, or your college matriculation which is why I make sure to put “Fresh” first!
What exactly does each of these terms mean? “Fresh” means doing something every day to enhance your brand so that it stays fresh—keeping your skills sharpened, packaging yourself well, etc. “Preparing yourself” means continuing your education through classes, professional development, building and contributing to formal and informal networks, and simply maintaining an active intellectual interest and knowledge capital in your career and your life.
“Aspiring to reach your goals” means having particular ambitions and then setting out to achieve your goals – Aim at nothing and you’re guaranteed to hit it! “Staying laser-focused” means intently focusing on each area of Fresh PASSION, otherwise you’ll miss the mark and not deliver your brand. “Selling your value” means understanding your return on investment (ROI), having confidence in your fullest potential, and constantly searching for new opportunities that will help you meet, or even exceed, that potential.
“Invigorating yourself” means having the tenacity and discipline to go the distance and secure your personal and professional success – fan the flame within and catch on fire! “Omitting the negative” means learning from the inevitable negative experiences you will encounter without dwelling on them or letting them consume the valuable real estate in your head – you have so much more ahead of you! And last but surely not least, “Nailing the brand” means successfully packaging your substance (your core) up and putting a bow on it so that you become a fresh brand that can successfully compete and WIN internally and externally (even in this unstable environment), which will enable you to achieve exponential personal and professional success.
Right now you’re probably thinking, “Okay, it all sounds good, but do you have any proof…?”
Fair question! It’s one thing for me to tell you how much sweet success you can achieve following the eight steps of Fresh PASSION, but it’s another thing entirely for me to show you how much you can accomplish when you add a little Fresh PASSION to your life! Let me give you a real example of the value Fresh PASSION can provide, gleaned from my own experience:
Early in my professional career, I started working in large Fortune 100 companies. I found myself bombarded with overly-prescriptive program initiatives, lofty sales goals, budget cuts, new competition, and more aggressive competitors. Rather than collapse under the weight of all these career pressures, I took the bull by the horns and started aggressively delivering the results that I thought the companies wanted. Though I was delivering the results, my career was stagnant and my wallet was filled with credit cards that were divided into two categories: Peter and Paul (as in robbing Peter to pay Paul and vice versa).
I was leading a life of personal and professional poverty with no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I became frustrated, bitter, and extremely angry. I blamed my university for not preparing me to land a more lucrative job, I blamed my mother for not having money to give me, I blamed my boss for not getting me promoted, and then I started blaming and doubting my own abilities.
I did not realize what I was doing wrong until I was sitting in a staff meeting one day and my boss announced that a colleague named Reynaldo had been promoted to a great new career position. He went on to say that Reynaldo had been chosen because of his ability to deliver results and lead people, professionalism, and because a number of people in the organization just knew him as a well-rounded individual.
The light bulb went on over my head. When I was in college, my dean, the faculty, hundreds of students, department chairs, and other members of the university community had a favorable impression of me, and there had been a clear, general understanding that I stood head and shoulders above my peers. So I thought about how I had earned their respect and come to be unanimously known by them as the stand-out student. It was the Fresh PASSION methodology that I had used in college.
So at that point, I started implementing the Fresh PASSION methodology and shortly afterward, I had established a personal brand as a leader who delivers results through and with people and is always offering and delivering something fresh. I initially started by just executing the programs that were given to me. However, simple execution was only delivering marginal results. I knew I could do better. I knew that something was missing; something was preventing me from moving the business further, faster.
That something was Fresh PASSION. If it didn’t exist in my workplace environment, then it was incumbent upon me to create and deliver it. This led to the delivery of top-notch results, nine promotions, and exponential personal and professional success. What I personally put in place and continued to refine throughout my career is Michael D. Brown’s Steps to Fresh PASSION!
And if you still have any doubts about the importance of following the principles of Fresh PASSION, consider this sobering statistic: GFC Economics, a respected London-based economic consulting firm, recently estimated that by spring 2009, the United States could be facing one million layoffs every successive month! If that prediction proves accurate, a substantial portion of currently employed Americans will become unemployed this year, and the hiring market will come to a virtual standstill. Only those professionals who have constructed the freshest, most appealing, competitive and most valuable personal brands will have any hope of obtaining or even maintaining a quality job. Hopefully the US employment situation will not become quite so dire, but we all know this year will be among the toughest in living memory for professionals, entrepreneurs, or students preparing to enter the professional world.
So there you have it. When your brand is fresh and highly-competitive, you will be viewed as a branded expert and an asset both internally and on the open market (especially to potential employers or customers). This will lead to more people, organizations, and/or companies subscribing to what you have to offer while providing you with a great, competitive, and substantial return (i.e. more money, more opportunities for personal and professional growth, more customers, etc.). Follow the precepts of Fresh PASSION and you will not fail; you will achieve exponential personal and professional success!
