Shine on Me ..

I met many people in my life, but I met someone like Sitara.

This spring 2001, I was one of the last passengers off the flight PK 724. The rush had cleared most of the airport. Dragging luggage behind I pushed my glasses on my nose and eyes tense. I had never actually been the home of my parents before, but had to have seen enough pictures of my family to recognize Pakistan, standing near the railing, looking straight at me and smiling.

Fariha Altaf Hamid and his decision migrate to the United States in the 1970s, when everybody left Pakistan in search of better opportunities. A Psychiatric Hospital small community of St. Louis, Missouri, which now belongs to the best psychiatric hospital in the city. And I was his son, his only son.

Once the United States, my parents were stuck in the mechanical, such as bearings in a machine. They worked hard at their careers, built a house, had a child and opened a hospital. Just never had the time, reason or even a family to return. My father was the only child and my mother had a sister, whose daughter was waiting beyond the glass doors of the arrivals hall. Although born and raised in America, "The Promised Land" where people have everything, I always felt something was missing in my life. I've never been able to pinpoint it, and that is exactly why I had flown 16 hours that day.
"I am a star. You? "Sitara were the first words she greeted me smiling mischievously, showing a perfect set of white teeth.

"I am a fan" I said, half surprised, half confused, do not know how to answer this question. This was not the kind of wishes I was expecting a young Pakistani girl.

Once in the streets of Lahore, I could not believe what I saw, wide four-lane road with a river arising from the wall of the booth to booth, large posters displaying all kinds of accessories for consumer and buildings that are not exactly the skyscrapers, but certainly there were more than two or three plants.

"I thought that America had fences, too," Sitara said, I doubt realize gaping out the window with his mouth slightly open, which was closed immediately, realizing that he has been like a fool.

"Yes, of course, America has the billboards. Pakistan does not know me too, "he said, a time to take my eyes off the road and looked. Where are the donkeys?

The donkey, he said, as a specific name, so she could give me an address and phone number.

"Yes, Mom told me that they are donkeys and horses with carriages attached to the back on the street. I was eager to meet them! "I explained.

Sitara childishly laughed and said: "In this time of night, they are probably sleeping. Poor souls do not have cable or Internet to Hold 'Em Up. "

"I feel they were waiting for two decades younger version of Pakistan, he added after a pause.

"Yes, that's what Mom said," I said timidly, a little ashamed of my lack of knowledge about the world outside the United States.

"Good boy, you're surprised," she said, and pressed the accelerator, reaching 100 km / h in the broad way, the lighted street.

Twenty minutes drive from the airport Khala Jee Sitara has been ample time to find his comfort zone with me. Shy at first, not knowing what to say to a Pakistani girl was so different from my expectations, as relaxed as she told me that I was different from that she had imagined. Apparently, he had to have different colored hair, a tattoo on his shoulder and trousers torn at the knees be considered as an ABCD (American Desi undetermined origin.)

"Hello, Kitty respond, said he first introduced me my family and home in Pakistan, "She's my cat.'ll be in charge of cleaning the bones. No no no, its bones, chicken bones and goat you eat, when you're finished with them, that is, or perhaps before that, too. We sometimes tend to jump on the table and insists on eating with us. In this case, answer Sara, she is fourteen, and certainly the most proud nerd in the world. She is honored to tell all your glasses are an inch thick! And here Saad is ten and very shy. Saad, said Salam Al Waqas Bhai, has chocolates in his bag and for the love of God stop hiding behind me! "

In next room, I greeted and Khaloo Khala Jee, they were very happy to hear me call Khaloo Khala and place of the aunt and uncle. My mother always taught me to call my relationship with her name in Urdu. Khala Jee was a woman of exceptional beauty, sharing features Acute my mother, but more chiseled and refined. In comparison, I Jee Khaloo like any other man of Pakistan, medium built, complexion and gray hair wheatish. His children have inherited her father's complexion with features her mother, then the more harmonious balance between genes that I have ever seen.

The month I spent in this "Land of the Pure seems" a short day today was happened so quickly. However, I can remember every day because it was so different from the previous. My family neglected nothing to make me feel at home and part of your family. I, in turn, as best I could to help, trying not to have diarrhea.

Sitara and I were the same age, was made two months more. After graduating from the university during the summer, she was taking a sabbatical before starting university. When Khaloo and Khala Jee went to work every day and the school children, Sitara and I stayed at home make plans for ourselves. And every day is an adventure with her.

Sometimes we spent all day cooking Sitara Pakistan mixture of culinary talents simple cooking of America, he had learned at university to get food like pizza or macaroni and cheese Handi biryani. None of us has was good at it, but we had a hell of a lot of fun to spend our inventions around the table at night, sometimes stifling our laughter when Khala Jee said things like: "You two should open a restaurant!" I do not know that the teacher was enjoying burned three times and started from scratch again!

After a day of all working women, as a joke, and I played PlayStation Sitara in the night. I want to feel and paste Tekken3 as a child again.

When we went shopping, we park the car in the parking lot and walk through region. I loved walking, give me more time to observe things around me. Sitara on the contrary, I hated and tires easily, This gave us an excuse to sit in random places with a snack and people watching us. I guess sitting on the sidewalk, on the stairs outside a store or the hood of the car was not very popular. Sitara once dared to speak of a merchant and ask Urdu if he could use the toilet. What I have said more or less translates into "You should go to the bathroom." I was furious at his reaction, Sitara until I deleted the store, barely audible through his laughter and I explained my terrible abuses "PAA" (You) instead of "Mein" (I).

On weekends, we like to visit historical places in Lahore. We pack a picnic basket and dine in the gardens of the great fortress of Lahore Shahi Qila o. Sometimes Khaloo Khala and we told stories, how they used to come to these places often in children because there was no other form of entertainment. There were stories of Khala Jee lose his way once in the Badshahi Mosque and cry for hours before my mother is and has offered a fresh Khaloo in the gardens of Shalimar, who had learned as a baby does not accept foreigners. And then there were stories Sitara said, I'm sure it had nothing to do with reality. "See those holes there? he said, pointing to the small, barred, "windows" the base of the walls of the tomb of Emperor Jahangir. "Those are dungeons that were used for prisoners. Once he came here on school trips and the little door open for us students to visit underground. Saying wife of Jahangir, Noor Jehan, is buried there and the place is haunted by his spirit. It smelled so strongly of roses there was not even funny! "

Family life Khala Jee, I quickly learned that, like any When another family, were not without problems. What I admired was their optimism, their efforts to take all day and not leave show your concern. A middle class family barely cover their costs in an economy plagued inflation Khaloo Jee had taken loans to finance education Sitara, who could not afford to pay. Khala Jee was a heart patient since he had lost his two years Adil, six years ago. Gradually realized Sitara is the one that has kept everyone. There was a cake to cheer up Sarah to get at least an A in their math test instead of a more A. It There were video games with Saad and you learn to spell words like "massive" or "burnt". He had to settle disputes between their parents when necessary. Suffice it to say, it was the lifeline of this family.

Khala Jee Khaloo and were mostly occupied their jobs, but when I have time Khaloo Jee explained the economy of Pakistan. The huge influx of money, development rapid, low interest rates, increasing employment opportunities, and when I find that all these things are good, had to dive in details of how everything was hyper-inflate the economy. Wonder, he was a banker. Khala Jee had only to ask to tell. Not having seen her sister for over twenty years, I know I missed a lot. All they talked only of Mom, stories of herself and mother and children and lives in the United States. Sara was really the hottest nerd I had known. 've Rarely seen in the house because it is limited to their room behind a strong books. I'm not even sure she slept at night because I have never found the room light off. Perhaps she followed in the case of a sudden after study-up-and-nerd revelation in the middle of the night. The few times I had the opportunity to speak, we speak of systems of mathematics education in Pakistan and the United States, and places that might apply to a PhD. Little matter how I tried, never tread outside the scope of studies. Saad, who has finally shed its cloak of timidity, has proved to be a nice guy. Sometimes, I made small talk with him but I felt he was more interested in my iPod, my laptop, my digital camera and shows that it was in me as a person.

But no matter what day was interesting, what Pakistan should never forget is the night. My second night in the country, Sitara took me on the roof, where there were two chairs, a table in the middle with her and the magazine on the subject. It seemed a place he visits regularly.

"See those stars there? He said, pointing to a group in the sky.

"Yes, I replied, looking in that direction.

"Can you see what looks like an arrow?" He asked.

"Uh … "I took my time trying to find the arrow that spoke, but I could see stars without makeup in any form whatsoever." No, just look like ordinary stars for me, "I replied, feeling stupid and sad because I could not see what is trying to show.

"Although Sure, they are normal stars, stupid, "he said and drew his hand across the sky, showing me how this regular group of stars looked like an arrow.

Thus began our long nights.

"I think I'm one of them" Sitara began to explain, but seeing the expression confused face, he added, "Sitara means" star "in Urdu.

"Oh, that's what I meant at the airport, I wish you were a little arrogant to be a movie star or something, trying to impress his cousin Umreeka return, I say, making the focus I just wanted to Desi.

She smiled. "Yes, that's what I meant. I always thought I am one of the stars. You know, when people become good stars die and shed its light on the world forever. Do you see those two bright stars out there? This is my friend, Mohsin. He died in a car accident when we were ten. And beside him, which is Hina. We were best friends for as long as I can remember. She died last year from cancer. "

Before I could interrupt a word of consolation, he continued. "I just here and talk to them whenever you need to get away from everything. The stars are so high that you can probably see all the people here. You know, Waqas, when you feel weak and problems seem to be the largest in the world, considers himself a star very low and how you and your problems are turning to them, compared to the world as a whole. It's as if you were now very small part of this great world. It makes you think other people with more serious problems than yours. "

"It's better in the mountains," she said suddenly, totally changing the subject. This I liked her, never stopped at the sad parts for long. "I like our summer holidays in the north 'coz, 9000 m sea, the sky is much clearer and closer. I do not know why or how, but even the stars seem happier. They so close to each other is like a chandelier fabric tight on his head. It is very pleasant. Sometimes I sit by the window all night looking at the sky. Ma does not let me sit there, she said that I do cold or a wolf … "She wandered in acute, excited as a child when he shows his new toy.

"Why not astrology as a major in college? "I asked. It would have been the best choice for your career, given the passion he felt in the subject.

"I thought, even took some courses, but then I realized that I did not know the figures and scientific explanations. "Because every time science enters something, the excitement out of it, he said, "And I do not think that the heavenly bodies is cool stars, dense molecular clouds and blah."

Try to establish the details of your right, I said: "Just because you see below money, does not mean you cold. The temperatures of the stars in the range 2000K-

"Look," she said, cut me off in mid sentence, no doubt irritated by this manly momentum to be scientifically accurate. "Anything that comes to science, the excitement is out!

We climbed on the roof every night after have done with the workday, and sit for hours watching the stars and talk. I was very talkative. Speaking of all and nothing at all. More discussion on science and technology intellectual, enjoys talking about little things, seemingly meaningless, but the representative for more details often overlooked otherwise. Talking, it was said, was a child and I noticed that my daughter trends so often kept for me. But with Sitara, I never had.

In less than a month, I learned much more about Pakistan than I could imagine, not so much experience through these conversations. Sitara on the little things told me about her life, from childhood to adulthood, I could see the intricate details their culture, customs and lifestyle, most of which were very different from mine. In general, we would have contrasting views on things which gave us more food for talk.

Seven years have passed since the spring of 2001. Today, Sitara is married and a beautiful girl. When I returned to U.S. after my first visit to Pakistan, I realized that my perception of my own life has begun to change, who encouraged me to think that I might be closer to finding answers some of my questions, the same reason I had been shipping to the mainland anyway.

Those long nights under the starry sky, I made me realize how it was important to take time to rest ever so often and I really think my life has been taken. I looked around and found people soaked in the sweat of the working day, full of bills were up, children who are dissatisfied by the day, the races he has to work harder, families and homes screaming for attention. Once trapped in the storm of life, people have fought tirelessly, ceaselessly, even for a moment of reflection, where the wind took them. Sitara taught me to pause, to surround myself with just me and nature, with myself and God, if necessary take a break.

With these seven years, Sitara and I was in touch by e-mail from time to time, but at night when I sit on the balcony of my bedroom window and watch the stars, do not need e-mail to find out how. Now, I understand. Sitara not talk with the stars in the sky, she talked to herself, a star on earth. In light of all the dilemmas that have faced, it has not, as one million people who knew, complain that there was no response, what really makes a sincere effort to find them. When I made the honest effort to travel 15.000 miles in search of what they needed my life, I found the key to the answers to my questions, I slept with her. Sitara, to teach me to speak to the stars, not just giving me the opportunity to talk to myself but a way to talk to him, too. When I look at the bright points of light at night, I can learn much more about life than I've ever said in the e-mails. From time to time I look at the sky, asking questions, knowing that after ten o'clock, when the stars shine through the window of Sitara, I'll have my answers.

Sitara is right, she is the star of my life.

And I'm a fan.

Use This Magic Word To Boost Your Creativity, Help You Reach Goals And Become The Leader In Your Field

Use this magic word to boost your creativity, help you reach goals and become the leader in your field.

By  Dennis Fisher

There is competition in every walk of life. It makes no difference how you earn money, you have to compete with many competitors and rivals in your field.  They are as anxious to succeed as you are.

To achieve greater success than your competitors and become the leader in your field, you have to improve your ability to think creatively.  You’ll have to come up with original plans of action and use your imagination to visualize new and different strategies.

Creativity is  definitely skill that can be developed.

Use this “magic” word.  You’ll immediately find you are able to think more creatively.   Print this word indelibly in your mind.  Focus on thinking about this word every day.  You’ll find that  will work like magic.

The word is IMPROVISE. This is a verb with tremendoujs power.  It can be defined as:

“To make use of existing materials and available tools that enable you to fill an unexpected and immediate need or help you deal with unforeseen circumstances”

Whatever type of work you do, at times you are going to be faced with difficult, unforeseen circumstances.  You’ll have to IMPROVISE: Come up with an immediate, effective plan of action.

Some people are more skilled in devising plans of action than others.  They are more creative.  These “creative people” have developed the ability to see things more clearly than others. They see things not immediately apparent to others.

Creative people have trained themselves to view situations from a completely different perspective.  They are able to visualize different and alternative uses for commonplace items

How can you develop your creative powers?    Focus your mind on the word improvise.

Start by becoming more observant. Start looking at everyday objects in a different light and from a completely different perspective.   Use your imagination to visualize unusual, alternative uses for the object.

Every single invention and discovery that has benefited mankind has been the result of creative people being able to improvise.   They have the ability to use their imagination to visualize an object being used in a completely different way.

There are hundreds of examples.  Here are just a few.

AN EXAMPLE THAT DATES BACK THOUSANDS OF YEARS.

The bow and arrow, developed by primitive man thousands of years ago, is an example of early man’s ingenuity, and ability to improvise,  born out of an urgent need to feed and defend himself and his family.

When man invented the bow and arrow thousands of years ago, he was able to do so because he was  able to use his mind to IMPROVISE.

When he looked at a branch of tree, he visualized how it could be used in an entirely new and original fashion.

He formed a mental image and imagined the branch being bent into a certain form with sinew tied to each end.

AN EXAMPLE OF USING A BIRD TO CREATE A FINANCIAL FORTUNE

Here is an example of a man able to IMPROVISE by  using  a bird for a completely novel and original purpose.

This example goes back to the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.  Nathan Rothschild, head of a family of bankers,  was aware how important it was to receive news of the result of war  before anyone else.  He also knew that if Wellington was successful at the battle of Waterloo it would have tremendous financial implications on the London stock exchange.

Rothschild devised an ingenious plan to obtain news of Wellington’s victory directly from the battlefront long before anyone else knew about it.  He used carrier pigeons.

Immediately Rothschild received the news, he immediately instructed his agents to start selling stocks.  When other stock brokers became aware of the extent to which Rothschild was selling stock, they gained the impression that the French had won at Waterloo and joined in the frenzy of selling.

As a result, stock prices fell dramatically.  Before the good news of Wellington’s victory reached London, Rothschild started to buy stocks at the drastically reduced prices .  This was the beginning of the Rothschild family’s financial fortune.

AM EXAMPLE OF AN ANIMAL  USED TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS.

Here is another example of someone with ingenuity who was able to improvise and visualize the enormous possibilities of using an animal in an unusual way.  As a result of the vision and the ability of an American woman  to think creatively, thousands of disabled people all over the world have benefitted and gained a new sense of freedom.

In 1927, an American woman, Dorothy Harrison Eustis, living in Switzerland, heard about a dog school in Potsdam, Germany that had been set up to train dogs to assist soldiers who had lost their sight in the war.  She visited the school and realized the enormous possibilities that existed for helping people who had lost their sight.

She  wrote an article that appeared in “The Saturday Evening Post”  about her experiences.  A young blind man, Morris Frank, from Nashville, Tennessee came to hear about the article and eventually became the first American to use a dog as a guide.

Aware from personal experience how dogs could benefit blind people to gain a new sense of freedom and independence, Morris Frank  set about  establishing a school for the training of  dogs for the blind.

The first blind dog school in America was established in Nashville in 1929.  Subsequently it was moved to New Jersey.

There are now hundreds of blind dog schools all over the world. Since those early days in 1929, thousands of blind people have benefitted from the vision of Dorothy Eustis and the tireless efforts of Morris Frank.

AN EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE WHO DECIDED TO IMPROVISE AND MADE ATHLETIC HISTORY

Before 1968, the  conventional method used by all high jumpers was to approach the bar from the front.  At the 1968 Olympic Games Dick Flosbury,  a young Oregon State University student astounded the world when he used a completely different technique that had never been used before – and he won the gold medal.

It was a technique that he had improvised. It came about, not by chance, but by careful observation of  the high jump techniques  being used at the time.

He saw there were obvious  flaws in the conventional approach high  jumpers  had been using for years. It was something no other high jumper had noticed, or if they had, they paid no attention it.  They continued to use this technique because this is the way “everybody else performed the action”.

Flosbury  decided radical  improvements could be made  and practiced using  a completely  different approach. He improvised and devised a radical new approach. He jumped backwards over the bar.

The rest is history.  From 1958 until today, ever since Flosbury introduced this remarkable example of creative thinking as applied to sport, his  creative, “Flosbury flop” technique, is used by every high jumper in the world.

There are hundreds of similar examples of people who developed their powers of creativity by being very much more observant and attentive than  others; noticing things others had missed.

There is a lesson to be learnt from their experiences.  Make every effort to become more, perceptive, alert and aware of  what is going on around you.  Think creatively.  Keep the word IMPROVISE constantly in your mind. In this way you’ll find there will be a remarkable improvement in your ability to think creatively.

I want a Mobile GPS?

I saw a video on youtube of a guy that had a GPS on his phone, and he was standing on a street, and his phone showed a map of where he was…and as he moved, the arrow on the map moved. I am planning on going backpacking through Europe with some friends this summer, and it will be the first time I have ever been there. I thought this would be very helpful. If I got the service for my phone, would it even work in Europe? If not, do they sell portable GPS devices that would do this? If so – what is the most affordable model? I want something cheap – since I would just be getting it for the trip, but I want it to work.

Get a TomTom. Verizon and AT&T phones with GPS will only work in the continuous 48 states. Make sure the TomTom you get includes maps of Europe.
