In their attempt to improve U.S. food safety The Obama administration has filled a key role within the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Michael R Taylor is the new Deputy Commissioner for Foods. This position left the new Bureau of Food, which began in August 2009.

The goal of this position is Bulk of U.S. prevention foodborne diseases and implementing other proactive measures for food safety. Taylor implement plans to ensure that labels food are clear and precise about their nutritional content as part of this strategy. So far the food industry focus has been mainly on reacting to problems, outbreaks of disease and widespread dissemination.

A draft food safety law in works for 2010 and Taylor is charged with preparing FDA for this bill to pass. This bill with the security plans are required for processors and manufacturers to be measured by a drastic increase in inspections of plants. The FDA also will have greater authority to recall food if this bill passes and the means to track implementation fruits and vegetables.

Since 2006, has been growing pressure to reform the food safety system that is currently underway in the U.S.. After of the extensive media coverage of spinach, lettuce, peppers and peanut sprouts, it became clear that the U.S. need a review of food hygiene.

As Deputy Commissioner for Foods, Taylor brings a wealth of experience in senior level positions at FDA and USDA. It is also well known for his work in academia as a teacher and he's been on many committees of the National Academy of Sciences.

Obama also faces pressure to fill a key position in the Department of Agriculture and Food Safety and Inspection Service. This pressure comes from politicians and consumer advocates is that this position has been vacant for over a year.
